Lowdown: Shaye's 'Fire' heats up
By KAREN BLISS -- For JAM! Music
On Shaye's new album, "Lake Of Fire," due Nov. 7 on EMI Music Canada, the harmony-driven roots-pop trio covers songs by Van Morrison, The Waterboys and Ron Sexsmith, but decided to go with an original for the first single.
Co-written by all three members of Shaye -- Kim Stockwood, Damhnait Doyle and Tara Maclean -- and their producer Jay Joyce, the title-track was serviced to AC and Hot AC radio Aug. 14, but hasn't charted yet, according to Nielsen BDS Canada.
Stockwood says their version of The Waterboys "We Will Not Be Lovers" was going to be the first single, but then they changed their minds and went with "Lake of Fire."
"It's just a really upbeat summer song," Stockwood says. "It's about doing what other people think isn't right, but living for yourself. The other girls might have a different take on it, but for me it's just about doing what other people might not think is right, but it's right for you."
Shaye, whose first album, 2003's "The Bridge," scanned 16,500 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan Canada, and spawned two radio hits, "Happy Baby" and "Beauty," began working on the follow-up in January at Orange Studios in downtown Toronto.
At the helm again was Joyce, who had since produced a Grammy-winning album by a Christian rock band called Audio Adrenaline.
Joyce flew in from Nashville for three different writing and recording sessions with the girls.
"It was fantastic. We love Orange. What a great experience," says Stockwood.
"One of us either had a baby outside or inside of our bodies while we were making it. Tara was pregnant. The first round she was eight-and-a-half months pregnant and Sammy (Kim's son) was only four or five months and then we went back in in May again and little Stella was only a few months old."
For "The Bridge," Stockwood was pregnant with her first child. Doyle doesn't have any kids. "We're not pushing her in that direction," Stockwood laughs.
In between the Joyce sessions, Shaye recorded an accappella song called "Ocean Of Sorrows" with producer Bill Bell, Maclean's ex husband. "He did it in his home studio," says Stockwood. "We wanted to put something a cappella on the record and we tried a couple of things, so Damhnait one day said, 'Why don't we just try and write something?' and myself and Tara were like, 'Right!?' and she said, 'Come on, let's do it,' so we wrote this song and Bill basically just recorded it that day."
Besides the original songs -- a handful of which Joyce co-wrote -- Shaye cut The Waterboys song and one by another Irishman, Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey." They also cover Ron Sexsmith's "Someway Somehow," which the Canadian songwriter included on his "Rarities" CD.
"It's his song. He wrote it way back when; I believe he wrote it for us," says Stockwood. "It's probably one of my favorite songs on the record and he played acoustic guitar on it."
Other musicians on "Lake Of Fire" are Shaye's touring band -- guitarist Stuart Cameron, drummer Blake Manning, bassist Pete Fusco, and cellist Kevin Fox.
Shaye -- which is booked by S.L. Feldman & Associates -- will be performing spot dates prior to the album's release, including Elizabeth's Concert Of Hope fundraisers for ALS, and has one show at a winery this weekend (see below).
Will the kids join them? "We might take them for some of it; it just depends what we're doing," says Stockwood. "I try not to. If I can help it, I won't, but it's sometimes fun."
Shaye dates:
August 26, 2006 -- Jackson-Triggs Winery, Niagara-On-The-Lake
