SYDNEY — The pen of Gordie Sampson has produced the highest prize the music industry has to offer.
The talented singer-songwriter from Big Pond became Cape Breton’s first Grammy award winner Sunday for penning this year’s best country song, Jesus Take the Wheel.
“Thank you so much. This is quite an honour,” said Sampson, sporting a tan military-style jacket, following a ceremony in Los Angeles.
The award was handed out in an untelevised portion of the Grammy show. The same song was nominated in the song of the year category but that award went to Not Ready To Make Nice, performed by the Dixie Chicks.
Friends and family gathered at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre to celebrate Sampson’s success Sunday night.
His sister Amy had heard the good news earlier in the evening but kept it from the group until it was flashed across the TV during the live broadcast.
Her ploy produced the cheers and tears among the group she had expected.
“I am absolutely thrilled,” said Sampson’s mother Flo just minutes after learning of her son’s win.
“There is no way to describe it at all but sheer brilliance with him and a thrill for us.”
According to mom, Gordie first took an interest in music at the age of two and became serious about it shortly after turning six.
“It was guitar at an early age and then piano and back to guitar and drums. He was a gifted boy from day one.”
His father Frank sat quietly upon learning his son had won a Grammy but his joy was still evident.
“I am very elated, I tell you. We always had a little faith in the boy.”
Amy said it was difficult to sit on the family’s good news for well over an hour.
“I wanted them to have the shock value on the TV but I was the only one that caught it at the bottom of the screen and had to announce it anyway.”
Amy was first told by Gordie’s wife Helen, who phoned from L.A. just after the Grammy was awarded.
Jesus, Take the Wheel, is performed by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. Sampson co-wrote the song with Brett James and Hillary Lindsey.
Natalie MacMaster was the last Cape Bretoner nominated for a Grammy back in 2001 in the best traditional folk album category for My Roots are Showing.
...and might I add...WOOHOO!!
