Beauty is in the eye of the shopper for bandmates

Lake Ontario is small comfort to an East Coaster, but the women of Shaye are making the most it. Whether they're soaking in green tea at Body Blitz or nibbling on southern Italian salads at Terroni, singer-songwriters and close friends Kim Stockwood, Damhnait Doyle and Tara MacLean have made good in Toronto. Today, the band talks shopping to Zosia Bielski:
MacLean I'm a little obsessed about tea and teapots. There's a place called the Tea Leaf on Queen East. I saw the teapot of my dreams in there and it was $350. I didn't do it but I will, maybe some day. On Queen West, there's the Tibet Shoppe. If you buy jewellery there, [the owner] will bless it for you.
Doyle I used to buy a lot of pottery at this place called Clay Design on Harbord. I go to Red Pegasus on College to get all my gifts. It's one-stop shopping. My favourite clothing store is Cabaret; it's vintage. I love the people that work there. They really know their clothes and their vintage cuts and lines.
MacLean I'm a big fan of Grassroots Environmental Products. I go there for all my baby supplies. They have all kinds of environmentally-friendly gifts and clothes, with one location on the Danforth and another in the Annex on Bloor. There's a little boutique called OQOQO [147 Spadina St.]. Most of their stuff is made from sustainable materials like bamboo and soy. They're going to be merging with the Lululemon line. In the Distillery, there's a store there called Lileo. It is the greatest store for clothes -- not cheap but amazing. They've also got a vegetarian cafe.
Stockwood The Outer Layer, which is owned by a woman from Newfoundland, has the best cards. They always have sayings written outside like "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
- Shaye released Lake of Fire last month, and will break into the reality TV circuit with Shaye, a documentary series set to air on CH Television, Global Television and Country Music Television this summer. Shaye performs at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga on March 30.
